‘Operation Free Sinjar’
The Kurdish Regional Security Council says that Kurdish Peshmerga forces have entered Sinjar ‘from all sides.’ They began their campaign to retake the town from Daesh on Thursday. The US-led coalition supported the offensive with air strikes. Daesh captured the town in August last year. They killed thousands of minority Yazidis. Others, they enslaved or raped. That prompted the US to begin air strikes in the region.
Daesh claims double bomb attack
Daesh has claimed responsibility for a double suicide bombing at a neighbourhood in southern Beirut. The first bomber blew himself up outside a Shia mosque and the second near a bakery. The Lebanese health ministry says a third bomber was found at the scene. The terror attacks killed at least 43 people and injured 239 others. The suburb is a centre for Hezbollah.
Authorities accused of abusing refugees
A British charity has accused Bulgarian authorities of brutality against refugees. Many asylum seekers have also accused police of extorting or beating them at border crossings. Hundreds of thousands of people have travelled through the Balkans to reach western Europe in recent months. The UN says almost 800-thousand refugees have entered the continent this year.
No more Mas
For the second time this week, the Catalan parliament has voted not to re-elect pro-secessionist leader Artur Mas. The Popular Unity Candidacy, which also supports independence, rejected Mas earlier in the week. The party said it was because he supports austerity and has a history of corruption. If parliament doesn’t choose a new president within two months, Catalonia will need to hold new elections. Meanwhile, Spain’s Constitutional Court has suspended the resolution towards independence that the Catalan regional parliament passed on Monday. It’s also warned that leaders who go ahead with the measure could face criminal charges.
