What's the secret behind the pristine ice conditions on the Rideau Canal Skateway in Ottawa? Meet the "Froster"! The ice resurfacer is a custom made machine designed by the Skateway’s maintenance contractor.
The National Capital Commission's ice experts and the official contractors are responsible for maintaining the World’s largest natural skating rink.
The machine looks like a Zamboni. It’s built with lightweight aluminum and can hold up to 3785 litres of water (1000 gallon).
The Froster has retractable wings that distribute water evenly across a span of 20 metres.
The Froster goes out on the ice at night, and takes 5 hours to cover the full 7.8 km of distance to both ends of the Skateway.
