The Mint Julep has become synonymous with the Kentucky Derby. And unless you're Hunter S. Thompson, that's a good thing. Like a lot of early cocktails, this one used to be prescribed as medicine. Somewhere along the line, patients began taking this prescription recreationally.
The bourbon used here, is a Kentucky bourbon and one of my favorites, Wild Turkey 101. It's high-proof, but smooth and flavorful. It's the perfect choice for the Mint Julep.
Be sure to use fresh mint and simple syrup, not powdered sugar or pre-mixed mint syrup. The simple syrup will round out this drink and make the medicine go down almost unsettlingly smooth. The actual drink made in the video was hands-down the best Mint Julep I've ever had and I've had professionals make them for me in the south. Recreate this drink as laid out in the video and it won't disappoint. It's exactly what the doctor ordered. Cheers!
