Anyone close to the rifle can appreciate suppressed subsonic 308 sound. But what does it sound like downrange? Do these massive 208-grain bullets still make a "Pew!" sound going past a microphone?

We've entertained a handful of theories about why our previous subsonic ammo tests have produced the fabled Hollywood "pew pew" sound. Is it a standing wave inside a hollow point? Is it the imprinted rifling buzzing through the air? Well, we can at least rule out the hollow-point theory. In this test we're hurling 208-grain Hornady A-Max bullets at roughly 1,050 feet per second, and the AMAX has no hollow point. Yet we still get the "pew!" sound, especially at 200 yards.
