Holy bucket list Batman! We're at the Slickrock Bike Trail in Moab Utah which just so happens to be one of the most famous mountain bike trails in the world...and for good reason. While there are far more difficult tech trails in Moab and around the world, Slickrock offers something different than bragging rights about how much radder you are than your bros....it offers a truly unique mountain biking experience.
Slickrock starts with a 2 mile trail that takes you to the 5 mile loop, and then back on that original trail for 9 total miles and around 1,700 feet of climbing. This loop is rated a black diamond, but I think that is more a rating of your cardio and nerves as the technical challenges aren't terribly difficult. Steep climbs and exposure are a plenty though, and if you're a bit shaky around cliffs....this may not be the best place for you. If you do take on this trail you'll be treated to some of the best views you'll probably ever see in your human existence. Snow capped mountains, Arches national park, the Colorado river, and miles of uninterrupted views that offer a sense of relief, calmness, and beauty that gets overshadowed in day to day life. Standing on this giant rock makes me so happy to be alive and that I chose this hobby, But then it's back to reality with this ass holes shitty music.
Enough hippy spiritual talk....let's talk the trail itself. Don't let the name fool you....this is the grippiest terrain I've ever ridden on, and also why it's such a popular trail. I found myself conquering steep climbs that look like vertical walls when standing there. It was one of the coolest sensations being in my easiest gear, standing up, mashing the pedals as hard and fast as possible, and just hearing that rubber grip the living hell out of those rocks. I know climbing isn't typically the coolest thing about riding, but I found it exhilerating and a personal challenge to get up all these steep rock faces...with only a small handful besting me. The first half of the loop felt like a constant climb, but towards the halfway point you're rewarded with some equally steep descents. This trail is basically a roller coaster where you get to pick the lines. A choose your own adventure of sessionable features with white paint guiding you should you not care to explore. This trail is exactly what I imagined when the word Moab is spoken. No it isn't the most technically exciting or challenging trail, but it is the ultimate unique mountain biking experience, and I'm thrilled I got to ride this iconic trail.
