STORYLINE:
Tens of thousands of Muslims gathered at the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem late on Monday to celebrate the holiest night of Ramadan.
The faithful marked Laylat al-Qadr, which means Night of Power or Night of Destiny, with prayers and fireworks.
Muslims ask to have their prayers answered during Laylat al-Qadr, usually observed on the 27th day of Ramadan.
They believe that on this occasion, God sent the Angel Gabriel to the Prophet Muhammad and revealed the first verses of the Quran.
The worshippers gathered at the holy site amid heightened tensions between Israel and Palestinians.
No incidents were reported.
