I love lifting just as much as yoga. Maybe more? And they are SUCH a beautiful pairing and both so beneficial to the other.
So if you are a yogi who lifts, or perhaps you’re thinking of giving it a try, here’s the 4 exercises I think complement a yoga practice the best:
1️⃣ Side Squat - a real ‘hip mobility’ exercise, this one will give you awesome flexibility in your inner thighs and improve your external rotation. Which will translate to better wide leg folds, easier skandasanas and much much more
2️⃣ Lat Pull Down - because yoga lacks pulling strength. Our Lats are HUGE muscles that are very neglected in yoga so this is my favourite for ‘making up for what yoga lacks’
3️⃣ RDLS (Romanian Deadlifts) - because yoga doesn’t do a particularly efficient job at strengthening our hamstrings but does a hell of a lot of stretching. This helps balance out the demands I put on my legs and also helps improve my flexibility here.
4️⃣ Dead Hangs - there’s a 2 for 1 deal here! Firstly, an amazing shoulder stretch, allowing our body weight to assist in improving our overhead reach for better shoulder mobility (think handstands, downdogs, chair, extended side angle, anything with arms overhead) AS WELL as hugely improving your grip strength, AKA your wrist strength. We bare a lot of weight through our wrists in yoga so strengthening them is key to looking after them!
