In this WVU football video, Couz and Mountaineer Paul from @LockedOnWestVirginia preview the upcoming college football game between the West Virginia Mountaineers and the Penn State Nittany Lions. They will do a position by position breakdown on each team and talk about what players and positions will cause the most problems for the Mountaineers. Couz will also give his score prediction at the end.
The West Virginia Mountaineers of the Big 12 will open the 2023 college football season on the road against the #7 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions from the Big Ten. The game will be played inside Beaver Stadium, where a crowd of approximately 107,000 are expected to be in attendance. James Franklin’s Penn State squad is nearly a three touchdown favorite over Neal Brown and his Mountaineers.
While neither team has publicly named a starting quarterback, we should see a clash between two talented signal callers with limited experience. Sophomore Drew Allar is expected to start behind center for PSU. While Junior Garrett Greene is expected to start for WVU. Allar is a former five-star recruit who threw for 344 yards on just sixty attempts as a backup during his Freshman campaign in 2022. Greene, on the other hand, is known more for doing damage with his feet. He came off the bench in relief of J.T. Daniels last season to lead West Virginia to a victory over Oklahoma. His 119 yards rushing performance helped him earn the starting nod for the final two games of the season.
Each team will be led by strong running games. Penn State has two Sophomores, Nick Singleton and Kathryn Allen, who combined for nearly 2,000 yards in 2022. In addition to Greene, WVU has a great sophomore running back of their own in C.J. Donaldson. The former high school wide receiver and tight end rushed for over 500 yards in just seven games during his freshman season. He missed five games with injuries.
Defensively, the Nittany Lions return eight starters from a team that went 11-2 a season ago. Some names to watch for are: Defensive End, Chop Robinson, Linebackers Abdul Carter and Curtis Jacobs, who combined for over 100 tackles and 10.5 sacks in 2022, and Cornerback Kalen King.
West Virginia is led by Safety Aubrey Burks, Linebacker Lee Kpogba, and Defensive End Sean Martin. Two of the best offensive linemen in the nation will be playing in this game as well in Penn State Left Tackle, Olu Fashanu, and West Virginia Center, Zach Frazier. #collegefootballpredictions #wvufootball #pennstatefootball
