An efficient kick has three important goals. First, it helps to lift your legs up towards the surface, decreasing your drag. Secondly, the kick functions as a stabiliser for your stroke. Your arms and upper body make big movements, causing the rest of the body to move as well. A well-timed kick provides a counter movement that balances your body and keeps you streamlined. The last function of the kick is a constant propulsion which, depending on your rhythm and power, can lead to more speed.
