The New York City Veterans Day Parade, 2015
November 11, 2015 marks the 96th Anniversary of The New York City Veterans Day Parade. The parade is hosted by the United War Veterans Council, Inc. on behalf of the City of New York. It is the oldest and largest of its kind in the nation. Since November 11, 1919, the parade has provided an opportunity for Americans and International visitors to honor those who have served, preserving our freedoms and defending our democracy. From its modest beginnings, a year after the Armistice was signed that concluded World War I, the parade has grown not just in scope and scale, but in national importance. The NYC Veterans Day Parade has endured and been a constant through war times and times of peace. It is a Veterans Day ritual for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, Armed Service Members, their families and tourists. It is widely covered by local and national media. The Parade has always been a reflection of New York City's sense of patriotism, community spirit and respect for The Flag.
Veterans Day is an official United States public holiday, observed annually on November 11, that honors military veterans, that is, persons who served in the United States Armed Forces. It coincides with other holidays, including Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, celebrated in other countries that mark the anniversary of the end of World War I; major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The United States previously observed Armistice Day. The U.S. holiday was renamed Veterans Day in 1954.
