JACKSON COUNTY, N.C. -- It may have been a quick winter weather system, but it caused some headaches including power outages and some quick juggling by mountain school systems, Monday.
Students came to school Monday morning at Jackson County schools, but were sent home at 10 a.m. when the weather turned for the worse.
"It's the black ice underneath the gloss or this dusting of snow that makes us worried when you're dealing with children's lives," Jackson County Superintendent Dr. Mike Murray said.
Some parents came to pick up their kids, like Trina Phillips.
"I had to leave work early and come pick up my children." But she says it was not a problem. "No not really. I kind of expected it."
The snow came with a partner -- wind, which knocked a tree onto power lines at midday, in turn snapping a utility pole along Buchanan Loop in Webster. Residents along the Loop lost power and say they relied on generators and fireplaces until it was restored.
