🚴♂️ From Outdoor Rides to Indoor Training: Rainy Day in Germany 🌧️
It’s Sunday, which is my LSD (Long Slow Distance) day on my training calendar. Which is usually a really good time because I can plan routes that reach out a bit further than I usually do during my interval workouts. See some new sights, some new towns. It’s just a good time. Except, of course, in typical German fashion, it is raining today and extremely cold. So, I’m here at the gym doing a four-and-a-half hour ride on a stationary bike. But check it out: I did come in early and put my power pedals onto this bike. So at least I get quality training, even if it’s not fun training. So let’s hope for better weather next Sunday.

It’s Sunday, the perfect day for a Long Slow Distance (LSD) ride—a cornerstone of endurance training. Typically, this is my favorite time of the week because it allows me to explore routes beyond my usual interval training loops, discovering new towns and taking in fresh scenery. Cycling outdoors gives me a sense of freedom, a chance to recharge while pushing my limits. However, today is anything but typical. The classic German weather has served up a mix of rain and bone-chilling cold, forcing me to adapt my training plan.
Instead of riding through scenic German landscapes, I’ve shifted my workout indoors to the stationary bike. Although it’s not my ideal way to spend four and a half hours, I’m determined to make the most of it. Training indoors comes with its challenges—mentally and physically—but it’s a solid alternative when outdoor conditions aren’t favorable. Keeping consistent with my LSD training is key to building endurance and sticking to my goals, even when the weather doesn’t cooperate.
To ensure quality training despite being indoors, I made a quick adjustment before starting my session. By installing my power pedals on the stationary bike, I’m able to track my performance metrics accurately and maintain my usual level of intensity. It’s a reminder that even when things don’t go as planned, small adjustments can make a big difference. While indoor training might lack the joy of an outdoor ride, it still provides an opportunity to stay focused and committed.
As I grind through today’s session, I’m holding out hope for better weather next Sunday. There’s nothing quite like the excitement of planning an outdoor route and the reward of seeing new places along the way. Until then, I’ll keep putting in the work, rain or shine. If you’ve ever had to swap an outdoor workout for an indoor session, let me know in the comments how you stayed motivated.
