After so many years of outcry and speculation, it seems that FC Barcelona’s alleged love affair with referees might be proven, or even disproven in a court of law.

After the Spanish Civil Police reported that they believe refereeing was not impartial during the time that Barcelona were paying Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira, a criminal investigation was opened. During the investigation, Barcelona claimed that the payments they made to Jose Maria were for services rendered, the Spanish Police do however suspect that FC Barcelona aren’t truthful in their claim.

Magistrate Joaquin Aguirre believes the corruption allegations against the Catalan Club have merits. The magistrate has emitted a series of resolutions so that the case can continue. He has asked for the investigation to explore if the payments made by FC Barcelona to Negreira are a crime in of themselves even if there was no evidence that the said payments were given to referees so they could influence match results.

The court also expressed keenness to find out if there is a system put in place that would allow Negreira to influence referees to alter match results.
