Minardi Team USA driver Robert Doornbos was running a steady pace, looking for a top-six finish, when Alex Tagliani (who was a lap down) launched an overly optimistic move into turn one, making contact with Robert and causing both to spin. Fortunately, Robert narrowly avoided the wall, but went a lap down as a result, and had to settle for eleventh position at the checkered flag.
Robert Doornbos: “We struggled all weekend really, except for this morning’s warm-up, and we couldn’t get on the pace for the race. We figured things out a bit too late in the weekend. It was a very difficult race and I’m glad that it’s over. My car wasn’t good enough to run with the leaders, and then Tagliani hit me in turn one and nearly put me in the wall. He was a lap down and I’m not really sure what he was trying to do, but it put me a lap down because the car spun and stalled, and that was effectively the end of my race. I’m looking forward to a real street circuit again, where hopefully we’ll be better.”
