Great Britain missed out on a medal as Hungary took gold in the women's canoeing K4 500m final ending Germany's dominance of the event. The British crew of Rachel Cawthorn, Jessica Walker, Louisa Sawers and Angela Hannah were targeting a bronze medal but could only finish fifth.
Germany have won gold at every Games since Atlanta Games in 1996 but Hungary beat them in one minute 30.827 seconds. The Germans finished in 1:31.298, with Belarus getting bronze with 1:31.400. The top-three placings at Eton Dorney were exactly the same as in last year's world championships, though Britain were fourth on that occasion. Gold for Hungary comes after three consecutive silvers in the K4 discipline and means that Katalin Kovacs, 36, has now won seven Olympic medals.
