According to the National Weather Service lightning kills an average of 49 people in the U-S each year and hundreds more are severely injured.
The NWS recommends staying indoors when there is lightning.

Fire officials offer a few tips for protecting your home as well during lightning.
"Protect your electronics, ground fault, your electrical systems, make sure all that stuff's in check, would be the biggest concern really," says Nathan Farrow, Assistant Chief, Rossville Fire Dept.
You should also stay away from windows and doors and stay off electronics that would put you in direct contact with electricity
