Pandas are a native species of China and are commonly found in the bamboo forests located in the provinces of Sichuan, Shaanxi, and Gansu.
The scientific name for this species is Ailuropoda melanoleuca, which translates to "black and white cat-foot."
These animals primarily feed on bamboo, but they also consume other plants and occasionally small animals such as rodents and birds.
To break down the tough bamboo fibers, pandas have a unique digestive system that is specifically adapted to their diet. Incredibly, pandas can consume up to 30 pounds of bamboo per day!
Speaking of bamboo, pandas possess an opposable "thumb" on each paw, along with five additional fingers.
This adaptation helps them to eat bamboo more efficiently by allowing them to hold and peel it with greater ease. While it may look like an extra digit, it is actually an extended wrist bone.
