Here's our Nina to tell you about some of the work we are doing with farmers.
Maize fields are a particular concern for water companies due to the 'gappy' nature of the crop. The gaps allow a lot of rainwater to wash through and run off into the water course, along with any chemicals, nutrients and sediments, which would end up in the watercourse. Undersowing maize with grass, provides a better cover for the soil prior to the maize being harvested and also a green cover over winter.
