Alright so what is the difference between muscular fatigue and systemic fatigue. So muscular fatigue is simply when your muscles can no longer overcome the resistance of an exercise despite eliciting as much force as they possibly can. So in this set of incline press for example, the only reason I failed the last rep was because my chest simply couldn’t produce enough force to lift the weight, and no other limiting factor like my cardio, breathing, core strength, etcetera, was responsible for the failure. This is known as muscular fatigue. Systemic fatigue on the other hand, is when some factor of your conditioning or cardio is responsible for you fatiguing during your set. So like in the set of squats for example, my conditioning after the 8th rep was impacting my ability to lift the weight and led to my breathing and cardio to ultimately stop my set, instead of just the inability to produce force in my quads. Now most exercises include some combination of both muscular and systemic fatigue, but the best exercises for hypertrophy are those that create the least systemic fatigue while providing the most muscular fatigue, so that your muscles are actually the ones being worked and not just your cardiovascular endurance.
