My D.G. Bamboo clone arrives. The leaves are huge and the shoot has that purple looking color you see in the photos of giant bamboo shoots only smaller. The weather has been perfect, hot and wet, for planting anything tropical. From Tropical Bamboo Gardens in Loxahatchee Florida.

This is probably the most expensive plant I ever bought but I'm absolutely sure it is a genuine Dendro Giant. The leaves are giant for sure. They look and feel thick like a banana leaf. I planted it straight into the ground without watering because I prepped the hole and watered it yesterday and then it rained all night so the ground and all the dirt is pretty moist already.
I tried for years to grow giant bamboo prepping and peeling, soaking, spraying thousands of seeds in stacks of bins. The very simple fact is that D.Giganteus only very rarely produce seeds and they are only viable for about a year. So ANY bamboo seed you buy on the internet is most likely at least a few months or even years old. So most of them can't sprout. You can however grow some types of bamboo from seeds but they will most assuredly NOT be D. G. Moso bamboo is another type you can buy seeds for and the ads will say it's a clumping giant. But if you look at Moso bamboo it's not a clumper its a runner. When you see images of Moso bamboo it's evenly spaced and everywhere in the picture. That's because it's a running bamboo and it comes up all over the place. Clumping bamboo puts up shoots just a few inches away from the main root.
If you want giant bamboo find a specimen and learn how and when to clone it or buy a rooted clone from a legitimate bamboo nursery or grower. That's the only way to get D.Giganteus that I know of and I tried thousands of seeds from dozens of sources over the years.

Update July 02, 2019 day 12 and the little shoot is now 18" so it grew 15 inches in 12 days despite getting munched on a little by a rabbit on the fourth day. If not for the rabbit it might be more like 17 or 18 inches in 12 days. It's definitely a grower.

**Notice UPDATE I think I found a legitimate dedicated bamboo seed supplier in Yunnan province of China. They deal in rare and hard to find bamboo seeds. They have collection dates seed viability tests and results and after a little confusion over shipping I have some seeds ordered. Shipping was quoted at $12 for but shipping was more.. I got a email saying the shipping had to be determined after I placed my order. I replied and asked about it and received a reply next day explaining how the shipper wanted more to send agricultural products. But I was assured my seeds were selected personally by the sales manager and shipped.
I was worried communication and translation would be difficult but I think the manager speaks English and her English skills were very good. Yunnanbamboo.com is the company.
