This was the day that Norwich City clinched promotion back to Division 1.
It was the first game that I traveled away to by myself. I'd started work in London a few months before and decided to get a train down to the game. I arrived at Portsmouth station by 11am and found a bus to Fratton Park. I then went into a pub opposite the ground and ended up playing darts with locals as the pub filled up with home fans before the game. walking over the road to the ground, I heard my name called out and it was Ken Brown (long story) asking if i wanted a ticket. He was obviously outside waitng for someone who hadn't turned up and needed to get back to the team.
So I ended up watching the game from a seat right next to the directors box. It was a great game but marred by fighting in what looked like the remaining three sides of the ground. After the game, I left and headed back to the city to catch a train back to London without incident. I heard later from friends that they had had to travel back to Norfolk on coaches with smashed windows.
