Eleven horses - including the unbeaten Certify - which have collectively won more than US$2 million in prize money have tested positive for steroids at the Godolphin stable.
Trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni has admitted making a "catastrophic" error.
Al Zarooni claimed that "because the horses were not involved in racing at the time, he did not realise that what he was doing was in breach of the rules of racing."
The rules of racing specify that the trainer is responsible for whatever happens to their horses.
Al Zarooni will now have to attend a British Horseracing Authority disciplinary inquiry.
The Godolphin operation is owned by Sheikh Mohammed, who is the ruler of Dubai and prime minister of the United Arab Emirates.
Sheikh Mohammed is yet to release a statement.
The stable have won over 200 elite group one races over the last twenty years and the latest developments will be extremely embarrassing for Godolphin, who are one of the biggest operations in the world.
