Volkswagen's 2024 Atlas three-row crossover gets a big refresh for the 2024 model year, despite running on a platform that's been around for 2018. The good news is, these updates are so thorough, this might as well be a new vehicle...mostly.
Here's a look at the highlights for 2024:
Exterior Design:
The 2024 Atlas sports a refreshed exterior that builds on its robust and dynamic appearance. The front end features a redesigned grille that is wider and more pronounced, integrating seamlessly with the new LED headlight design that adds a sharper, more modern look. The front bumper has also been reworked to include larger air intakes, improving engine cooling and aerodynamics. On the sides, new wheel designs have been introduced, available in sizes up to 21 inches like the ones on our tester, giving it a bolder stance.
Performance and Efficiency:
All 2024 Atlas models now come standard with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 269 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission, and either FWD on the base model or AWD on the rest of the lineup. The crossover is also rated to tow up to 5000 lbs. The EPA fuel economy on the loaded AWD R-Line model we tested is 19 city, 25 highway, and 21 overall.
Technology and Connectivity:
Technologically, the Atlas takes a leap forward with a new 12-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument panel standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, allowing for seamless smartphone integration. A more advanced navigation system offers real-time traffic updates and re-routing options. Additionally, the digital cockpit has been updated to provide more customization of the displayed information, including full navigation views.
Safety and Driver Assistance:
Safety has been enhanced in the 2024 Atlas with additional driver assistance features. New to this model year is an enhanced adaptive cruise control system with stop-and-go functionality, a more sophisticated lane-keeping assist system, and an improved automatic emergency braking system that now detects pedestrians and cyclists. These join the existing suite of features like blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a 360-degree camera system, ensuring a comprehensive safety package.
Overall, the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas offers significant improvements that boost its appeal in the competitive large SUV market.
