4:33 Should you invest into VWO?
5:17 Final thoughts
Today I am going discuss another one of Vanguards ETFs called the VWO ETF.
I will have a quick overview of the ETFs composition, where it is mostly invested, how much it will cost to invest into this ETF and I will also see how my position of this ETF has been doing after about 5 months already. I invested $624 into VWO, let’s see if it was worth it.
So the VWO ETF is a popular choices to invest into for exposure to markets outside of the US because it consist of stocks that are outside of the US market and that is exactly why I hold it in my portfolio, because it serves as a hedge against a downturn within the US market. Economic downturns in one country or region can be offset by growth in another. So to explain it better, if the US market goes down for any reason, then in theory, my investment portfolio will still be doing okay with the VWO in my midst.
The VWO ETF:
Also known as the Vanguard Emerging Markets ETF. Just like its name states, this ETF invests in stocks of companies located in emerging markets around the world, such as Hong Kong China, Brazil, Taiwan, and South Africa. Again, invested outside of the US.
This ETF holds 5208 stocks total. And looking at the top 10 largest holdings within VWO, some familiar names pop up again. Alibaba, Tencent, Naspers, I guess Naspers is not the most well-known company, but being from South Africa, I know it as it has been one of the highlights of the JSE the last 10 years. JSE being the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
So the top 10 within the VWO take a 23.37% portion of the total ETF.
As I already said VWO is an emerging market tracking index, so it not invested into Europe really or North America. There are a lot of Indian companies featuring in VWO, behind the Chinese market of course.
So how has this ETF done for the last decade and how much will it cost you to invest into it?
Looking at the chart, you can see it has actually not really performed that great over a 10 year span, delivering only close to a 4% growth. But like with most markets, if you had invested into the emerging markets ETF just after the pandemic crash, you would have had some great recovery growth at close to 30% in one year.
It will cost you $1 for every $1000 you invest into the VWO every year. So still on the rather cheap side for investing into ETFs.
And, how has my position on VWO done so far?
Almost 5 months ago I invested around $624 into the VWO ETF.
