A top-flight career that spanned 17 years, but only yielded 449 appearances. Yet in those appearances he manged an astounding 295 goals.
It was perhaps during his time at Inter Milan that he suffered his worst spell of injuries.
During a five-year stint at the San Siro, he only played 98 times. He still bagged 59 goals for the Nerazzurri before leaving for the Santiago Bernabeu.
However, it was on this day that his career was all but over.
Ronaldo was making his long-awaited comeback after being on the sidelines for five months.
He took to the field, but with a matter of minutes he was on a stretcher and leaving again.
It was the year 2000 and Inter were facing Lazio in the Coppa Italia, El Fenomeno took control of a lofted ball, he spun and dribbled at defenders. It was the magic that had been missing from Inter football.
He had traveled but a few yards and went for his trademark step over. As his foot hit the ground, he crumpled into a heap. Writhing on the floor in agony.
The reaction from the Lazio players gives us an idea of just how bad it was. The Brazilian Ballon D’or winner can be seen grimacing on the floor.
A lesser player would have never played again, not only did he return, but he did perhaps a better player than when he left the game under such terrible circumstances.
